TREE Restaurant

Posted by | Travel | No Comments

Koichi Takada Architects designed this cool TREE Restaurant in Sydney, Australia. More photos below.

Our practice explores how contemporary interior design can best embody the qualities and virtues present in nature. We propose a dining concept that recreates HANAMI, the traditional Japanese festival of the Cherry Blossom in bloom. Dining under the cherry blossom trees is a social gathering that celebrates the arrival of spring. This concept not only represents the serving of Japanese cuisines, but also hopes to capture a symbolic place for the locals to gather and dine under ‘one big tree’ and for the owner to nurture the business as if growing a tree.

We wish to emulate the comfort and tranquility the canopy of tree can create. Timber profiles create the branches of the tree, transforming the Sushi Train restaurant into a place of nature. Dappled light filters between the timber branches. The flairs of light change as you move throughout the restaurant, mimicking the irregularity of natural sunlight, while highlighting the path of the Sushi Train.

Conceptually the TREE has become symbolic of the nurture and care put into growing this successful business.  The branches extend to the perimeter, encompassing diners and workers alike.

The timber profiles have been cut using CNC technology, minimizing waste and allowing accuracy and detail in the design. Gaboon Marine Plywood, brings the warmth of timber to the interior, which compliments the texture of the rendered walls. The contrast of these elements highlights the central TREE and the Sushi Train below.

via foxnews. A 17 year old boy named Zheng in China decided to sell one of his kidneys to buy an iPad 2… without telling his family. He was able to find a buyer over the internet who was willing to pay 22,000 yuan ($3,400) for the organ. Apparently his mother’s suspicions were aroused when he returned home one day with an iPad 2, an iPhone, and a big gash across his stomach… I wonder what he’s going to do when the iPad 3 comes out?!

258 Square Foot Lego-Style ‘Transformer’ Apartment

Posted by | Cribs | No Comments

I’ve highlighted a few of these ‘transformer’ apartments before… here’s another really cool one. Great use of space. Check it out after the jump.

When Christian Schallert isn’t cooking, dressing, sleeping or eating, his 24 square meter (258 square feet) apartment looks like an empty cube. To use a piece of furniture, he has to build it.
To sleep, he rolls his bed out from under the balcony, his stairs become become bedside tables and he can even swing his TV out from the wall.
To dine, he lowers a plank from the wall, his flower stand becomes a support and his stairs become a bench.
To cook, he clicks a spot on his vast wall of click-able furniture, and a spring-loaded door swings up to reveal an instant kitchen: double-burner, dishwasher, sink, countertop and microwave oven. The full-sized refrigerator and freezer click open just alongside.
